Pushing Boundaries and Provoking Thought is what this Film is All About
Russian-born writer, director, and producer Marusya Syroechkovskaya and co-producer and assistant director Gleb Nechaev are bringing their short film, Exploration of Confinement, to viewers from around the world at the 2013 Cannes Court Metrage and its Short Film Corner. Among these viewers will be film financiers, famous directors and producers, and international critics. They will have the chance to see some eye opening answers to thought-provoking questions like: “What would happen if my foot was caught in a bucket? My head trapped in a turtleneck sweater? How long could I stay trapped in a garbage chute? More importantly, would I grow to enjoy it?”
Exploration of Confinement strives to answer these and other interest-piquing questions in a documentary style film. Marusya Syroechkovskaya is a member of the Russian Documentary Guild, which explains how the film style came to be. Gleb Nechaev adds his artistic flair with his influence and direction, making for a visually interesting and stimulating short film.
With talented actors, such as Olga Ardova, Zack Helwa, Andrew Stern, and others (even the co-producer and assistant director Gleb Nechaev acts in this film), this short, 19-minute film, which was made in Russia and the United States, is sure to test the minds of the audience at its premiere. In the preview, one young actor speaks to the audience as she has seemingly come to terms with her avoidable and uncommon confinement.
Exploration of Confinement may speak volumes to people who feel safety in confinement, although in a nontraditional sense. Pushing boundaries and high marks for creativity are what the film critics, institutions, and other creators will be looking for, and this film seems to have it all.
The film’s short trailer shows a woman trapped in the confinement of her turtleneck, not caring whether she sees the detail in life around her. At one point she manages to smoke a cigarette through her sweater, unashamed and willing to adapt to life in her restraint.
Exploration of Confinement also follows one man who travels with his foot stuck in a bucket, clopping along as though he has no choice in the matter. And yet another man has his finger stuck in a tub faucet, confining himself to the inside of his bathtub. These short tales of confinement come together to show different perspectives on the seemingly content and comfortable side of unusual and completely voluntary confinement.
Unique and inspiring short films are always trademarks of the Festival De Cannes Court Metrage. This film is sure to be an integral part of the festival, as it will keep us asking questions about ourselves and exploring our own answers. As an inspirational piece, only the future can tell what influence the film may bring others.
Exploration of Confinement is to be seen at the official 66th Festival De Cannes Court Metrage 2013, a great honor and exciting moment for Marusya Syroechkovskaya and Gleb Nechaev.
